totally....I heard it on NPR this morning as well, something along the lines of disagreeing with Bush on gay marriage as freedom means for everyone regardless of sexual orientation...I also learned his daughter is a lesbian...interesting.
You didn't know his daughter was a lesbian? Wow and i thought i lived under a rock sometimes. I remember Dick Cheney getting tons of flack for his acquiescence to the Bush administration's not very gay-friendly agenda given that he has a gay daughter (who's been quite out and i think even active in gay rights activism, though she's toned it down during the past few years), and there was the whole thing about his daughter being paid off to not say anything hostile to the official Bush administration statement (i don't know how true that actually was, but i remember seeing a lot about it).
Anyway, phin, my dad actually sent me 2 things about this today. This (http://www.reason.com/hitandrun/006545.shtml#006545) references an AP account that just mentions that he thinks states should have the right to decide what constitutes marriage. This (http://www.dynamist.com/weblog/archives/001294.html) uses an ABC report which further quotes him as saying "With respect to the question of relationships, my general view is that freedom means freedom for everyone." (That, of course, is an incredibly radical statement if taken to its logical conclusions, and i'm sure he doesn't mean it as broadly as some of us might like to interpret it as, but it's still really great to hear him saying something more than "I love my lesbian daughter" -- not that isn't itself a step in the right direction, of course.)
And of course a whole bunch of commenters already beat me to it because i was at work all day, but i just wanted to weigh in.
