What I Just Finished Reading

Nothing. Still have not attempted books. Currently getting over a migraine. I have to say, if I am now down to one migraine a week (which would be great, actually) I don't see why it has to be on Comics Wednesday two weeks in a row so that all my comics reviews are ass because I am clearly having difficulty comprehending comics.

Perhaps I could wait until Thursday to read them? No. It must be Wednesday. Otherwise the internet will spoil me.

1. Yesterday morning when I got back from my walk, I somehow lost the top to my airpods' outer case. It had to have fallen out either on the porch or inside the house, because it's very noticeable without it so it could only have been right after I put them back in my pocket after putting them in the case. I looked around a little but had to go to work, and Carla looked some more during the day and didn't find it, so I ordered a new case, which came today and I really love it. For one thing, the top is attached! I really like the variety of colors, so I ordered another one for my backup pair, and for Carla's ones as well. Right after that, Carla found the top to the old case in the living room in a tangle of power cords lol. But these new ones are cheap and I really do prefer the attached top. The one I thought I lost was a Star Wars Pride one from Disneyland, so I'll still use it seasonally (I also have a Mickey Halloween one).

2. I got my haircut today. Carla had an appointment, too, so it took longer than when it's just me and I didn't feel like going to Gardena just for a little bit in the afternoon, so I just worked from home the rest of the day. It was just web meetings in the afternoon anyway.

3. This morning when I got up, my PC would not turn on. The power cord is one of those that has a light showing when it's plugged in, so I could tell it was still getting power and that wasn't the problem. I thought maybe it was stuck in an update or something, so I went for my walk, but when I came back it still wouldn't turn on. I decided to unplug it from the power strip while I ate breakfast and then it finally came back on again! I really should do a backup of my files just in case...

I have slightly more brain now and maybe enough energy to post more? Let's find out. I'm sure you've missed me posting about random video games.

Anyway, Slay the Spire 2, the sequel to my most favorite roguelike deckbuilder Slay the Spire came out in Early Access two weeks ago, and is apparently stunningly popular -- it had 500,000 concurrent players its first weekend, beating basically everything else on Steam at the time, which no one was really expecting from, you know, an indie card game.

I haven't played it enough to give a full review, because even in EA there is a lot more content -- there are five characters, two of which are brand new, all of which have new cards, and there are all sorts of new mechanics and events I haven't discovered yet. So far I have now beaten what exists of the game with four of the five characters and I know I haven't seen anywhere near everything yet. I think it's currently balanced harder than the original game, but the subreddit is full of people saying it is way too easy, so I guess we will see what happens when the balance patches start coming out.

But the really cool thing about this game is the multiplayer, which we only found out existed in a trailer that they released, like, two weeks before the actual game. It has co-op with up to four players! I only have one friend who plays this game, as far as I know --

gelishan, who actually introduced me to the original game -- and we played a game of it the other night, and I have to say that co-op is absolutely the most fun way to experience the game. It helps to be on voice chat, so you can coordinate things like 'who are we targeting first" or "if you have anything inflicting Vulnerable, please play that first" or "do you need this Strength Potion" or "do you want me to play Piercing Wail this turn so you don't take 35 damage straight to the face" or whatever, but I guess theoretically you could play it in silence and just deal with the fact that everyone is playing their turns simultaneously.

Anyway, that is clearly the way this game has always been meant to be played and I need to do this again at some point. The co-op multiplayer is absolutely amazing! I don't know that I would recommend the game in its current single-player state to people who haven't played the original, just because it is already a hard game and it helps to have some idea of how three of the five characters play, if you're going to play it by yourself. But if you are playing multiplayer, I think you can just go for it and you and your friends can take turns carrying each other through the game.

So, yeah, that's what I've been up to, as I slowly regain some brain. Slaying the Spire anew!

(Also it's really weird to actually talk to someone you have known on the internet for, like, 25 years, but you've never heard their voice before.)

1. The other day I got an email from Shake Shack that they have a promo buy one get one free for their Korean menu items and it's expiring today, so we went down there tonight for dinner. Not sure how much longer they will have those on the menu (the person I asked last time said probably until April) but we at least got to try them one more time.

2. We wanted to stop by Sidecar Donuts for dessert afterwards, but as it turned out they close at seven on weekdays, so we missed out. But Carla was really in the mood for donuts, so we stopped at DK's on the way home and they are open 24/7, so we were able to get some donuts after all.

3. I had a last minute meeting pop today for 5:30pm, but thankfully I was able to finish my other meetings, which had to be done in person at the office, by like 3:30 and then get home to take the later meeting by web (which was with people outside our company and would have been by web anyway even if I'd been at the office). It ended up going over an hour, so I would have hated to be stuck at work until almost seven and then still have a half hour drive home.

In the Fitness trackers poll, 18% of respondents regularly use a fitness tracker to monitor their activity, 10% also use an app, and 16% use the pedometer on their phone; 48% said "other no", proving that I really should have got more granular (and emphatic) for non-adopters. Sorry! (For me, I enjoy some of the "gamification of exercise" parts, but when Fitbit eventually insists that I have to merge my data with my Google account in a few months, I plan to delete the app and use my device as a standalone thingummy.)

Almost nothing. Andrew and I started (barely) The Warrior's Apprentice by Bujold, the first Miles Vorkosigan book, in audio, read by Grover Gardner. And in ebook I've just started Courtney Milan's m/m novella, The Pursuit of... set during the American War of Independence.

Kdramas
I was sure I'd have drifted away from One Spring Night by now in favour of the new thing, but I'm semi-managing to watch that and Undercover Miss Hong in tandem. I love both of them in very different ways. OSN is slow and as full of social nuance as an Austen novel; UMH is silly corporate spy shenanigans and found family.

(In Undercover Miss Hong, the 35-year-old lead is undercover as a 20-year-old, and every time she glances around quickly and her shoulders move too, I think, yep, it's the stiff neck that gives you away. #relatable)

As predicted, Pru and I started Love Scout. I am immediately obsessed with it all over again, ahhhhhh! How am I going to bear the wait between watchings??

Other TV
A bit more of Ponies, but it's so tense that I keep avoiding it. It's only an 8-episode season, and we're halfway, so I should probably bite the bullet and power through.

Episode 2 of R.J. Decker was terribly written, to the point where I don't know if I can keep going. (I think the Movie Briefs podcast may have ruined me for PI shows: I kept going, "Is this witness tampering?" and "Stop revealing case information to suspects!")

More of The Pitt (I am worried about Robbie) (no spoilers, please!!) and Cheers.

And last night we watched the bizarre combination of:

the pilot of The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell, a gorgeously cinematic show about loss, grief, and New York "society" people dealing with nature in Montana. It's like the love child of A River Somewhere (Australian fly-fishing show which I happen to own on DVD), Schitt's Creek (but without the humour; just the rich people out of their comfort zone part), and [something dealing with partner-loss], and
The Naked Gun, starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson (surprisingly watchable; made us laugh).

We've also watched a bunch of stand-up lately: Marc Maron, Rose Matafeo, probably some others.

Writing/making things
I finished a round of rewrites on one of my started-for-Yuletide fics and sent it back to beta; now I need to apply the same rewriting strategy to my other started-for-Yuletide fic too. 520 Day assignments will out by the 8th, so that's my deadline for these: three weeks. In theory, that should be do-able.

I'm averaging one fic a month so far this year, which is pretty slow-paced for me, but it isn't nothing.

520 Day, yay!! FTH, eeee!! Writers' Hour continues to keep me showing up; it's a structure that works really well for me. Kdramas and those of you who recommend them to me. AO3 comments on some of my favourites of my fics. Sunday's long bike ride to buy the best hot cross buns didn't have any negative arm/wrist consequences. The air fryer I inherited is ridiculously tiny, but I'm enjoying it. Good weather. Reasonably good health. (*knocks on wood*) Cat! Andrew!

1. We made mac and cheese for lunch inspired by the ramen mac and cheese we had at DCA last night. Added dashi in the water while the macaroni was boiling, and topped with furikake (all we had was gomashio, which is a mix of black sesame seeds and chunky salt) and it was delicious but we decided adding toasted panko really would make it better, so we actually ended up making it again for dinner with the panko. It was so good. Carla bought a different type of furikake at the store today but I just used the gomashio again and that went so good with the panko. Will definitely be making mac and cheese this way again.

2. A couple weeks ago I got the annual Costco rewards gift certificate and we finally braved Costco today so we could use it. We weren't going directly home, so that saved us from being tempted by any perishable products and we pretty much stuck to our list of basics that we needed to stock up on.

3. The weekend is over and I'm not thrilled about that but it was a pretty nice weekend overall.

Got up yesterday morning baked 4 loaves of soda bread (here's a picture of 2 of them), ate some myself (I kept the 4th loaf) then schlepped out ot the island to deliver them to my brother, sister, and niece.

We went out for a fun dinner - the onion rings at this place are so good! even if the service was a little haphazard - and then I went home with my brother's family. It was early enough that I could have come back here, but my middle niece was like, "aren't you going to hang out with us?!" so of course I stayed, and ended up watching KPop Demon Hunters with middle and youngest niece (youngest was like I don't wanna! but at the end she was like, that was really good!). I should note that they are 27 and 24, but they still like hanging out with me! <333 And now we want the prequel about Rumi's mother and her demon affair.

My car this morning came 90 minutes early, so I rolled out of bed expecting to be able to have a bagel and a cup of coffee before I had to leave, but there he was, blocking the driveway, so I got home before I was even scheduled to leave.

The amount of benadryl and Zyrtec I have to take at their house because of the cat is ridiculous, and I ended up coming home and sleeping for most of the day. I'm glad I didn't cancel my PTO day tomorrow though - I scheduled it when this dinner was originally planned for tonight. I did tell my boss she could ping me if she needed me ahead of their meeting with the board chair tomorrow afternoon, but I so hope she doesn't.

1. Last year when we went to Japan we parked at the airport and it was pricey but not too bad, but this time we're going for longer and I looked into it and the prices are kind of ridiculous, unless we park in the offsite lot and take a shuttle, which brings it down to about what we paid last year. So I think we're going to just leave the car at home and uber instead. The main annoyance with that is that if we put both cars in the driveway, Alex and Nessie will have to park on the street when they're over for cat sitting. But I think if we pull both cars all the way into the backyard, they'll both fit and then leave the driveway free, so I'm leaning towards that. I'm glad I recently took that work trip and am now familiar with using uber more, specifically at the airport (I'd only ever used it once before).

2. Recently Carla ordered a set from the lego store and it was stolen off our porch. We never have issues with packages getting stolen and would not have even realized what happened except she happened to find the empty shipping box on the street a couple doors down. When we checked the delivery info the picture of the box on the porch was really awkwardly posed and the time of delivery was when multiple people were in the living room watching TV and the windows were open, making it odd that no one heard it, so I think it was probably the driver who took it. We live on a sort of cul-de-sac, so there's not a lot of foot traffic, especially on a Sunday evening, and would be really weird for someone to come up onto the porch to take a package when there are noises from inside making it clear people are right there. Anyway, she submitted a complaint and lego sent a replacement, which arrived today safe and sound. I do wish lego didn't send their packages with a return address label that says lego on it, though.

3. We had a nice dinner at Disneyland tonight. It was pretty warm during the day, but not anywhere near as bad as last weekend, and had cooled off nicely by the time we got down there.

Wax informed me that it was definitely coming out too small and would need to be started over, so this morning I spent several hours unraveling it after I finished weaving in the ends on the Bumblebee Breton (#2).

The three skeins rolled together into one yarn ball are the size of a baby's head, according to Wax. (Close enough I guess.)

1. The store still had McConnell's peppermint stick ice cream in stock somehow, so we bought more. This is definitely the longest I've seen it in stock past Christmas, but I'm not going to complain.

2. In three weeks from today we'll be in Japan! Hopefully!

3. I'm playing another matching game, this one where you have to make 50 groups of 50. It's fun, but I shouldn't be doing this much clicking, it's not good for my wrist!

Recently Finished
Fog
Classic middle grade novel about a girl who lives on an island and when she starts junior high, she starts boarding on the mainland with some other island kids. She's been told it's difficult to adjust, but that doesn't prepare her for the mind games and possibily supernatural powers of the principal and his wife. I didn't read this as a kid, but I must have seen someone talking about it online and decided to check it out (it's been on my to-read list for a while so I don't remember where I heard about it). However, I don't feel like it really holds up to a first-time read as an adult, and I won't be continuing the series.

The School for Good Mothers
Oof. This is a tough book to rate, because it's very well-written and interesting, but I did not enjoy it at all. Not only does it become pretty obvious early on that there's no hope of any sort of happy ending, but there are many excruciating moments when you just want to scream at the MC for making bad decisions, even while having sympathy and seeing how she's been driven to that point.

The story takes place in the near future, where her state has just introduced a new program for people who've had their kids taken away by CPS. They are sent to a "school" (basically a prison) for a full year to supposedly learn to become good parents, but they are set up at every turn for failure and constantly subjected to psychological torture in the name of training them. It's a hard read, and I don't know that I'd actually recommend it, but it's good.

The Price of Honey
Short story about a group of women, the current wife and ex-wives of a tech billionaire, meeting up at his funeral. This was a freebie through Amazon First Reads, which is why I grabbed it. I liked the twist.

Idyll Threats
First in a murder mystery series about a closeted gay cop (though he's not closeted by the end of the first book) in a small town in the late '90s. I liked it all right but I'm not sure I'll read the rest.

This Is Not the Jess Show
The Truman Show for the YA crowd. I did watch The Truman Show back in the day but remember nothing about it except the premise. I really liked this take on it, and the ending was great.

Mapmakers and the Enchanted Mountain and Mapmakers and the Flickering Fortress
Books two and three in the Mapmakers trilogy of YA graphic novels. I read the first one a while back and didn't remember too much of it, but was able to catch up without having to reread it. This is a cute series.

Huda F Are You?
YA graphic memoir about the author's high school years after moving from a city where there were very few Muslims, to Dearborn, Michigan, where many of her classmates were both Muslim and hijabi. I've read a couple of the author's non-YA graphic novels about being Muslim and liked this one a lot more. There are others in the series and I'll probably read them as well.

I finally got some Minute Maid frozen orange juice concentrate and Orange Julius take 2 is way better than the watery version I made last month. Woo!

Tomorrow, I have to get up early and bake Irish soda bread to take to the family - we are going out for St. Patrick's Day dinner (and also the NINTH[!!!!!] anniversary of my father's death - it is his recipe I use; I miss him a lot).

Shrinking: ( spoilers ) Anyway, the first few episodes of this show are a little tough to take but it has morphed into a funny, endearing, poignant hangout comedy and I recommend it! Harrison Ford is SO GOOD in it too.

The state of triplet sweaters when last checked on was that I finished #1 (a traditional Guernsey using PetiteKnit's Storm pattern in navy blue dk-weight Norwegian wool Sandnes Peer Gynt). Then I took over #2 (a mariniere using PetiteKnit's Marseille pattern in yellow stripes on black in dk Drops Merino Extra Fine) from

waxjism, who had already knitted the body, and knitted the hem ribbing and sleeves and the neck ribbing while Wax started #3 (a traditional cabled Aran in forest green heather Peer Gynt). Wax got halfway up the body of #3 before stalling out in the cold snap while I knitted a little bit on a pair wool shorts for myself before giving up knitting in the cold as well.

Nobody knitted for a month or so. But all that time I knew I was going to have to unravel the neck ribbing on #2 and redo it, because it came out too tight/small.

After I ran out of wool for the shorts the other day, I unwillingly went back to the sweater. Knitting in black wool is very annoying because it's difficult to see the individual stitches. Yesterday I unraveled the collar and started over, getting through 17 rounds out of a planned 21, before I realized it was still too small and started over again. The third try is now at 18/21.

I need to order more wool for the shorts and some more needles and sock yarn and sock blockers.

We still haven't replaced the kitchen faucet, either. I asked Wax what she thought about ordering it a week and a half ago, and she said she could pick it up on her way home from work, but this hasn't happened yet.

1. Neither Carla nor I had realized it was the season, but we stopped in at McDonald's for lunch today and saw posters for Shamrock Shakes, so we each got one. I am fine with them not being a year-round thing, but they are surprisingly tasty and I do like getting at least one when they're on the menu.

2. We're having a couple days of warm weather after a few cooler days, and there's supposed to be more warm weather next week, but for once the weekend is actually supposed to be cool. It'll still be warmer in Anaheim than at home, so we're thinking of going to Disneyland for dinner on Saturday rather than breakfast/lunch, but hopefully it won't be too bad. And it wasn't as hot today as it was a few days ago, at least. (Really making me wish the sun was still going down earlier, though! Then we'd have cooler evenings.)

1. Tuxie was back this morning looking no worse for wear (he still is missing fur/scabby on his forehead, but that's from a couple weeks ago). He wasn't out there first thing when I went to feed the other cats, but was there when I got back from my walk. He doesn't understand daylight savings time, so it was too early for him the first time lol.

2. I finally managed to get a work meeting scheduled for Monday that has been so hard to wrangle. Hopefully it doesn't fall through (even the people who didn't accept the invite yet did specifically say they would be able to attend so fingers crossed).

3. The other night Ollie looked so sad at being evicted from the couch when we had dinner lol. He settled in to the perch in a few minutes, but those first few minutes he just looked so put out.

minoanmiss meant by SHOPPING TRIP. *takes a moment* Anyway, it was great. I love Bujold's character work and her humour. Looking forward to the next one and getting to know Miles.

Kdramas
Still re-watching One Spring Night, lol. I made a flaily post about it a few days ago, but then realised that my "realisations" were actually explained in the next few scenes, so I don't know if I'm seeing the show differently or just remembering info I learned from the first time around. I've since privated the post, but if you've seen OSN and want to talk to me about it, please do!! I am mildly obsessed.

I also started Undercover Miss Hong on

adore's rec. I'm in the middle of episode 2, and it's great so far. It reminds me of Good Manager (AKA Chief Kim) to the point where I checked if it was the same writer (it isn't), and otoh, the lead is played by Park Shin-hye, who was the nun in the "nun undercover as her twin brother in a boyband" drama, You're Beautiful, which was my gateway drug into the world of Kdramas, so in a way it feels like coming full circle. (Here, she's undercover as a 20yo.)

Other TV
We finished the Return of the King extras (omg, so stressful!). Still watching The Pitt, of course, though I really think it works better all in a bunch, rather than one episode a week. (I won't say "binged", because the most we ever manage is three episodes a night -- that's a lot for us.)

Happened to notice that Cheers is on Neon (NZ streaming service, incl. some HBO), and randomly started watching it -- it's aged surprisingly well! Very white, and the sexism vs feminism tension is front and centre, but Sam is fine, and everyone seems to be having a good time. We'll stick with that for a while and see.

The pilot of R.J. Decker, a new PI show loosely based on a Carl Hiaasen novel. It's very network TV, case-of-the-week and easy-going. Good supporting cast. Seems fine. A few episodes of Ponies, about two CIA widows trying to be spies in cold war Russia. They don't have much trade craft yet, so it's equal parts comedic and tense. Half an episode of SurrealEstate.

My sister and I are still on Fringe season 4, in which the entire multiverse revolves around Peter; I prefer Lincoln. And we watched some Bluey, naturally. Just finished season 1 and started season 2. 🧡💙🧡

Audio entertainment
All the usual suspects. More Movie Briefs, more local politics. And the episode of A Bit Fruity recced by

sabotabby (who gives excellent podcast recs, btw). A Tech Won't Save Us episode about The Luddite Club. A bit of Ad Astra about pacing. I think I'm spending too much time listening to podcasts.

Online life
The 520 Day Guardian Reverse Exchange is coming soon!! We've been doing some behind-the-scenes prep for that. And wheeeee, I won a Fandom Trumps Hate auction (my first time bidding) -- so exciting!!

Writing/making things
Still bashing my head against the two things I started for Yuletide. It would be fantastic to get these off my plate before I get my 520 Day assignment and have to redecorate my brain in Guardian. *plugs away* (I feel like my intuition is offline, and I'm having to figure everything out with my inept thinking brain, why?)

In drawing, I did a practice pic of Zhao Yunlan, and wow, expressions are hard; the difference between worried and scared is, like, a millimetre here, a millimetre there...

Life/health/mental state things
The tsunami of ambient stress is making itself felt in my body. When I bought my new phone, I somehow got six months' free premium Fitbit membership again, so I tried wearing my Fitbit to sleep, to build up a data profile. And yep, an "objective" poor rating makes a subjective bad night's sleep feel so much worse. That's why I stopped doing this last time! So I've stopped again. Also, my resting pulse rate was going up and up for a while there. /o\

Had my free breast-squish day.

It's the one post I remember to make every year!

They have called this day The Eleventh of March! And whom-so-ever of you gets through this day, unless you are shot in the head or somehow slain, you will stand at tiptoe when e'er you hear the name again, and you will get excited!...At the name March The Eleventh!

We happy few, we few, we band of brothers...our names will be as like...household names. And those who are not here, be they sleeping or... doing something else...They will feel themselves...sort of crappy. Because they are not here to, to join the fight. On this day, the Eleventh of March!

(Okay, I remember it because it's also my LiveJournal's birthday and I still haven't deleted it and so they send me an email every year. My LJ is now 25.)

1. I fried up some frozen croquettes to go with the leftover curry tonight and they were so good. Nothing like a crispy croquette fresh from the frying oil!

2. I was worried that daylight savings might throw me off my morning schedule, since I did wake up an hour late on Sunday, but yesterday and today I've woken up at my usual time, despite it technically being an hour earlier now, so fingers crossed that it continues. I like the time I wake up now because it gives me plenty of time to take a long morning walk, do all my morning chores, and have breakfast without even feeling the least bit rushed about starting work, and I really don't want to have to be waking up with an alarm in order to do that.

3. The annoying lady at work who recently moved into my office and was at the desk next to mine messaged me Friday that she is leaving the company and Monday would be her last day and she was sorry she wouldn't see me to tell me in person. I don't like, hate her or anything, but she is just low level annoying, and as seen by her text, for some reason thinks that we are closer friends than we are, so I am glad that she will no longer be at the desk next to mine.

4. I haven't seen Tuxie around today, but hopefully he will come around tomorrow like nothing happened and lounge on his cardboard scratcher again.

I don't love that Nolan McLean gave up 2 home runs in the same inning in this game, but I do love that Team Italia celebrates with an Armani blazer and an espresso (they literally have an espresso machine in the dugout and if someone hits a homer, he gets a shot) and then the team captain kisses the guy while everyone else does this: 🤌

Work is currently bananas. Listen, I have a whole document I wrote on how to change/streamline board stuff to foster discussion and engagement, but we were supposed to do it methodically and not implement it until the June meeting, except now we are doing it NOW, and everything got upended in the stupidest way possible. I maybe kind of couldn't control how irritated I am about it because it is basically making me do double the amount of work and is seems to me like it is just going to achieve the exact opposite of what we want it to, but apparently this is coming directly from the new board chair. I told my boss that if I am right, and that this doesn't do what they think it is going to, I might not say it, but I will be thinking the world's biggest "I told you so." And she was like, that's fair. Sigh.

1. I walked up to Whole Foods tonight and dropped off my Amazon return and got an email saying the money was credited back to my account while I was on the walk home.

2. I did two store visits in Orange County today and Carla came with me and went shopping (one of the stores is right next to a Book Off) while I worked, so we could just go straight to Disneyland on the way home. We haven't been doing midweek trips as much this year, but a friend of hers is in town for work and this was the best time to meet up. (But since the Food and Wine Festival just started, there's a ton of new menu items to try, so it works out in that regard as well.)

3. Tomorrow I am just doing a store visit at the store near home and then WFH in the afternoon for meetings, so no long drives, which will be nice (especially with gas prices as they are, though I do get reimbursed for the store visits).

4. The weather was about 15 degrees cooler today than yesterday at home and around 20 degrees cooler down in OC. Much nicer than yesterday!

5. Molly has been really into the old cardboard cat house lately for some reason.

We went down to DCA again today for dinner to meet up with a friend of Carla's who's in town for work but also spending all his downtime at Disneyland.

Since we'd just been to the park a couple days ago and also had had kind of a long day today before getting to the park, we didn't really do much other than have dinner and chat, and then walk around the park and chat, but it was a nice visit.

Our beloved floofy bun, Rowan, passed away a week ago. He was ten years and four months old (the average lifespan of pet bunnies I saw quoted some places is 2-4 years, and 10 years is the expected upper limit for his type of bun) and was healthy, cheerful, friendly, and sweet his whole life; he died very suddenly at home, apparently of old age. I miss him - he was always more friendly and cuddly than Japp - but I'm glad he had a long, happy life.

1. We went to Best Buy this morning to look at mice in person and I ended up getting a different Logitec one, the MX Master 3S, which fits almost as well in my hand as the Microsoft Sculpt. I set up a return for the other one to Amazon. I do like some things about it, but it felt at the same time too small and too large, and while I didn't have wrist pain after I got used to it more, it just never felt comfortable. I do like that this new one, like the one I'm returning, is bluetooth rather than USB, especially since apparently it was the USB dongle that was causing my PC's sleep issues with the Sculpt (all these years I had no idea!).

2. It was so hot today. Not the hottest we've ever had, but record setting for early March, and it just felt awful. Like that baking desert feel whenever you step outside. I'm so glad we didn't have anything that required being outdoors during the day today, just errands in the car in the morning. I did take a short midday walk, trying to stick to the shadiest streets, but even then I couldn't stay out for long. Tomorrow is supposed to be about 15 degrees cooler, so fingers crossed.

3. Despite the heat, I made Japanese curry for dinner and it turned out delicious. I found a bag of frozen kabocha in the freezer the other day so I put some of that in as well, and that gave it a little something extra, even though I didn't feel like frying croquettes with it as I'd originally planned, or doing fried eggs over top like I sometimes do.

Ugh, daylight savings, why are we still doing this???

Anyway, I got up at my usual workday time instead of sleeping in so I could get the onions in the slow cooker, and I did both the "soak onions in cold water in the fridge for 15 minutes" and wore the stupid onion goggles, and still by the 4th onion my eyes were extremely unhappy with me. *hands* Thankfully I only had 6 onions total, so it all got done, and for dinner I made French onion pasta as planned, and now I have dinner for 3 more days as well. I do love this pasta dish - and I always use bucatini, which is one of my favorite pasta shapes, so it was pleasing all around. Every time I make it after not having made in a while, I'm like, why don't I make this more often!? and then I remember the onion-slicing and how annoying it is. Anyway, definitely recommended for a delicious and easy dinner (except for the onion-slicing). I also made bacon so I have lunch for the week also.

I meant to mention this yesterday and forgot, but The Mountain Goats collaborated with Mary Chapin Carpenter to cover World Party: Put the Message in the Box (don't worry if you only recognize one or two of those names - the song is good!).

Recently Finished
The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective
Non-fiction account of an investigator who was the model for many early fictional detectives, and the case which brought him to the public's notice. This was really interesting and well-told. I listened to it as an audiobook and liked the narrator as well.

The Monsters of Chavez Ravine
Set in LA in the early 50s when the city is trying to force people out of the Chavez Ravine area so they can raze the houses and gentrify the area. The MC's dad is among the few holdouts, and when she goes to check on him, she finds that there are all sorts of monsters terrorizing the residents, which turns out to be part of a supernatural plot by one of the guys leading the push to clear out the area. It was an interesting idea, but the execution and writing was just okay.

Murder by Moonrise
Third book in the Dr Julia Lewis murder mystery series. They changed the narrator for the audiobook, which I would normally not be pleased with, since I like consistency, but the new narrator is Marian Hussey, who is the narrator for another series I like, and I like her narration a lot. I can't remember a thing about the previous narrator, so it's overall a positive change.

Fuck Off Squad
Short graphic novel about a group of three college-aged friends and their romantic relationships. It's cute. Reminds me a lot of Scott Pilgrim in tone and style.

Spellbound: A Graphic Memoir
The author is a trans woman, but she's written this semi-memoir using a cis female protagonist in her place. I thought it was an interesting way of doing things, and enjoyed it a lot.

1. We had a nice morning at DCA. It's the first weekend of the Food and Wine Festival, so there's all sorts of exciting new menu items and everything we had today was delicious.

2. We have Verizon for our phones and until recently had Frontier for internet, but it seems Frontier has been bought up by Verizon, which is funny because we used to have Verizon until they sold our area off to Frontier or something idk. Anyway, I've been getting messages from Verizon saying that if I combine my internet and phone accounts I can save money and I just hadn't gotten around to it, but today they sent a flier in the mail, too, so I finally went and did that and now I will save $15 a month.

3. Multiple supermarkets near us still have McConnel's peppermint ice cream in stock, even though it's a seasonal flavor, so we keep buying it. I'm sure it won't last that much longer, but we're enjoying it while it's still here. It's so good!

4. Got some super cute pics of Gemma last night.
