day 3: from the road
Jun. 9th, 2005 06:42 pmi must say, i am feeling a great deal more love for starbucks at the moment than i usually do. here i am in colby, kansas with wifi and a soy latte. mmm.
we didn't have time to post this morning due to a somewhat later start. we stopped in kansas city to catch up on apartment-related e-mail and weren't really cruising 'til about 10:30. we hope to make it to denver around 8 rocky time.
when i said most of yesterday's drive would be in missouri, i was wrong. i was thinking of today's drive through kansas - which, yes, is what we've been at all day. yesterday, we passed out of ohio, through indianna and illinois and into missouri, almost to kansas city. there, in oak grove and also in st. louis when we first hit mo, we saw some impressive, windy thunderstorms. much scarier than the ones we get at home, i'd say.
i was scared we'd encounter tornados but that turned out to be today's adventure. it was just starting to seem a little stormy when we pulled off the road to get gas. there, at the pumps, was a team of tornado-hunters, the weather-vane things on top of their cars, hurrying to fill their tanks and get back on the road. a bit freaked out, i checked the radio and, indeed, there were tornado warnings for the very county where we were.
i am terrified of tornados. perhaps because they are so rare where i am from. and i didn't relax until we were well into the next county and under sunny skies again. i hope graham and sheridan counties are doing just fine.
the other striking thing about this area is just how much people want to tell me that jesus loves me, that he saves and that he doesn't want me to kill my baby. ok. i get the point. and i'm sure they'll all be happy to know that, due to my lesbianism, an unwanted pregnancy is a highly unlikely possibility for me.
ok, next time you hear from me, i hope i'll be in denver.
