and the other thing i've been thinking about - on a MUCH sillier note - is american idol. specifically, how bandom singers would fare on american idol. i amused myself thinking about this for a large portion of my drive home from estes park. i concluded that the ones who would do the best would be brendon, patrick and william. and brendon would win. because patrick's voice is awesome, but randy would call him "pitchy" (and would be kind of right, much as i hate that non-word, it really kind of applies to patrick). brendon has that whole looks-charisma-voice package going for him. gerard wouldn't make it far because, srsly, they only pretend their not looking for a certain sound/style. and he isn't it. i'm really fine with that, myself.

but, so, if you, my beloved flist, were the voting audience, who would you kick off first in a battle of the singers? don't use american idol standards, just your own - whatever pleases or displeases you about their singing voices.

Wow, that was surprisingly hard. I love them all so much! But yeah, I'm thinking of all the live performances in my assessment, and the "pitchiness" pains me. /unpopular opinion

I picked William because when inky was just getting me into bandom, she made me a CD that I listened to nonstop for about two weeks, and I didn't know who anyone was yet, but I could tell when the FOB section ended and the TAI section began because although the music sounded fairly similar to my ears, suddenly the singer sucked.

william does not suck! jeez. and, really, neither does patrick. he's pitchy, but if he would just let someone teach him some control, he would be a fucking powerhouse.

i voted for travis. he's just not really a singer. he gets by, but he has about a 5-note range and no focus to his sound. it's not that i don't love him, it's just that he's not an impressive singer.

but how weird is it that bert's got the majority of votes so far? i suppose not so many people <3 the used. but still. i'm impressed with his voice every time i listen to them.

OK, OK, "sucks" is too strong. He's fine, but he's just never impressed me, with either his range, his style, his power, his timbre, anything. Plus, I was comparing him to Patrick -- he didn't stand a chance! And I don't really like TAI's music all that much, so I've never listened to them enough to correct my initial impression of his voice.

I have never heard a single song by the Used. Am I missing out? Bert just comes across as such a dickhead in LotMS, I haven't even wanted to give them a try!

omg, POOR BERT!

he does come across as a dickhead a lot, yeah. but... he's troubled? i mean, i think it's unfair to assume that he and gerard aren't friends because of something bert did. if you follow the lotms timeline close enough, you see that they were still friends for at least a while after gerard got clean - so it's not like they were only friends while doing drugs and having bad times. though it would seem that bert is still a big user. yeah, he's a weird guy. but a weird guy with a tendency to make out with his bandmates (and gerard. and other guys) and with a pretty darned good voice. i don't always like what he does with it, but that doesn't make it bad.

and that's interesting what you say about william. i don't love tai all THAT much but my fave thing about them is williams voice. i think it is powerful and has an impressive range and a timbre that pleases me. just proves how subjective it all is.

Berrrrt! I have to say, I've really been loving Lies for the Liars, listening to it nonstop on my ipod. It's making me rethink what kind of music I really like. Out of bandom, the albums that I really can listen to start to finish, with no skipping, ad infinitum are MCR's 3 Cheers and Bullets, and, somewhat surprisingly, MSI's You'll Rebel to Anything. The Used seem to be heading in that direction for me too, which I hadn't expected. They're all kind of cranky/angry sounding! I think I must be in a cranky/rebellious phase of my life. It's nice to have a good soundtrack for it. And also of course FOB's Infinity I love entirely, except for Golden. I ♥ you, Patrick Stump! I'm sorry I voted you off the island!

i only know two songs by the used but i do like them. and not only bc they're about gerard. :)
