yesterday was full of conventiony goodness. liz and i got our registration packets in the morning and then sat around for a while waiting for stuff to start. it was a good sitting around. the weather here has been AMAZING so far. sunny and hot but with a nice cool ocean breeze. just gorgeous. anyway, the one thing i was nervous about, coming here, was seeing dr. jones from my masters program. i have so many not-so-fond memories of her and... well, yeah, anyway. so, of course, what's the very first thing on the schedule? a "round table" featuring craig arnold, andre thomas and... dr. jones. ah yes. and it was fine. of course it was fine. the discussion was pretty interesting, a good ease-into-the-convention kind of thing. and friend!rachel (who was in the same masters program as i) and i said hello to the big J afterward and it was ok. i may have to think more about her later, but, yeah, later. we also saw matt g from that program which was great - he's one of the people i would most want to see. hope to see him more.

so then we had lunch in an outdoor restaurant on the pedestrian mall here. liz managed to knock back two mojitos. she is impressive that way. next on the agenda was a concert session. we heard some children's choir (eh), some high school choir from texas (damn you, texas, why are your choirs so good?), an excellent university choir from florida and the swingle singers. i loved them. especially their "dido's lament." fantastic and entertaining and a nice break from serious choir-ness.

then i went to and interest session that just didn't turn my crank. more aimed toward high school music teachers, i would say. oh well, i survived. then it was break time for pretty much all of us. i went back to the hotel and exercised. we all went out together for dinner - liz, rachel, ben, alexa and ben's friend mark and i. after dinner was the international choir concert. we saw a choir from the philippines that i didn't really like (i seem to be alone in that opinion, though, so maybe i just hadn't recovered from my dinner margaritas yet). and an indonesian girls choir (pictured above) that was pretty fantastic. and a south african boys choir. i didn't think they were great but they won me over with 1. a thing they did combing nkose sikelel'i afrika and wachet auf and 2. they finished up with that boot slapping dance thing that i don't know what to call but that is very cool. and then a swedish choir with a beautiful sound to finish off the choral day. ahhh.

then i bumped into a woman from marblehead who i met 3 time before - once in high school (ok, i didn't really meet her but i played in a pit orchestra with her boyfriend and i was jealous bc i had a crush on him), then at my grandmother's funeral where she was the singer at the church, and once when she auditioned for the program at BU while i was there. and now here in miami. funky.

said goodnight to her and went out for drinks with liz, ben and steve, later to be joined by tim, vaughn and dan. lots of gay, there. except steve, poor steve. it was a pretty hilarious and fun night. sitting outside (again, nice), drinking a mojito, telling lame-ass choir jokes with drunken friends. ah, conventions.

today is awesome because rachael is coming today. well, really late tonight. but i have to get ready to switch hotels and everything. rach is going to love it here.

See! You and Sarah B. really should have come with me to Henniker to see/hear them back in Feb 1987 instead of just hanging around the house in Harrisville!
