Jun. 23rd, 2005 09:30 am"why don't our kitties groom each other all the time like sirius and remus?"
this was rachael's question to me last night as we cleaned up dinner and the kitties scuffled. my response was to laugh my ass off. she was referring to
madmadharri's cats, but still, the question will remain one of my favorite things she's ever said.
so, yesterday was again both productive and exhausting. we extracted tag sale items from the study and basement and packed three more boxes of stuff. i set up a mover to help us load the truck here and rach set one up on the other side. i got permission from the landlord to put up some shelving in the bedroom. i balanced my checkbook (eek, scary) and went to the bank and called the neighbors to tell them about the tag sale. and i called friend!rachel to ask about registering for classes and get some advice on preparing for the preliminary exams (in musicology, aural skills, tonal analysis, theory, post-tonal analysis, counterpoint, and choral stuff. oy).
that was an interesting conversation. my schedule for the coming semester looks nice. i realize it will be filled in with grotesque amounts of reading, writing and practicing but right now, i will have a choral conducting symposium on tuesday nights, white note notation on wednesday mornings (something to do with transcribing renaissance music... i don't even know, i just know i have to take it), twice a week rehearsals with the choir i'm assisting, one hour a week conducting lessons and hopefully one hour a week of voice lessons. that's it! that's kind of amazing. i can't overload on credits because then i'd have to pay for them. and this year it would be out-of-state tuition. my assistantship takes care of 6 credits and thus limits me to two or three classes. um... ok! i know those classes will be a ton of work but... still, better not to feel like my schedule is overloaded before i even start. yis.
the 'symposium' class is the one i'll be in every semester, the core of the degree, more or less. and oh my goodness, it sounds like it will be... something. i will be the only doctoral student in the class. the others have all finished their coursework (except rachel will be in white note with me! yay!) and i'm the only incoming. there will be three masters students. all men. two are second years and they are both young and married with two children each. one is a mormon. the third guy is fresh out of college... a somewhat conservative, southern college. oh goodness, this should be interesting.
i just can't believe it's all starting so soon. this morning, i was half-awake for a while before getting up (such a beautiful, sunny-cool morning!) and i kept thinking/dreaming about our new house and what it will be like when we get there. it's so exciting. also, i think everyone should have a jeanne (add coach-type lady) because, really, i would be all about procrastinating and stressing out right now if it weren't for the work i'm doing with her. she is enormously helpful. instead of riding the stress wagon, i'm getting shit done and being excited about the future. it's nice.
