i love rachael. i imagine you all know this by now but it stands repeating.

last night, she gave me some beautifully thoughtful gifts with a card that just made me cry all over the place. the most amazing of them were this set of three silver bracelets printed with three lines of poetry:

Happiness. It comes on
unexpectedly. And goes beyond, really,
any early morning talk about it.

they're the last three lines of one of my favorite ray carver poems.

So early it's almost dark out.
I'm near the window with coffee,
and the usual early morning stuff
that passes for thought.
When I see the boy and his friend
walking up the road
to deliver the newspaper.
They wear caps and sweaters,
and one boy has a bag over his shoulder.
They are so happy
they aren't saying anything, these boys.
I think if they could, they would take
each other's arm.
It's early in the morning,
and they are doing this thing together.
They come on, slowly.
The sky is taking on light,
though the moon still hangs pale over the water.
Such beauty that for a minute
death and ambition, even love,
doesn't enter into this.
Happiness. It comes on
unexpectedly. And goes beyond, really,
any early morning talk about it.

for our 6 month anniversary, i gave her a book of his poems and wrote that quote on the inside. here we are at six years plus and it still feels relevant.

and then she gave me a ring made by the woman who made a ring i gave her a few years ago. it's a silver band with stars engraved in it. the one she gave me is thinner than hers, the same but different. it's beautiful.

and then she asked me to marry her. well, it was more of a conversation than that - there was no getting down on one knee or any of that. but the result is the same. i said yes, of course yes.

so we're engaged.

i've been reading delivered from distraction, a really fantastic new book about ADD, and the author keeps repeating his core advice. which is that the key to a good life with ADD is the same key to any good life, do work that you enjoy and find the right person to go through life with you. i feel like i've been taking this advice without knowing it. i'm heading back to school to refocus on this field that i want to be my career. and i know without a doubt that rach is the best person in the world for me to be with, and i want to be that person for her.

30 seems pretty fabulous so far.
