Ode an der Herbst
Sep. 28th, 2002 02:15 pmreasons i adore autumn:
~apples~ i don't actually like apples all that much. but i love the look and smell of them. i don't like pie, but i love to make apple pie. i love apple trees against a blue sky. i love picking apples, the sound of their skin breaking, the thud they make when they hit the ground.
~leaves~ obviously. who could not love this about autumn? watching the changes day to day. a windy day sending leaves flying. collecting and decorating with them. good enough reason to live in new england for the whole year.
~pumpkins~ all the things you can do with them. carve them. decorate with them. the weight and scent of them. the many ways to cook sugar pumpkins: risotto, ravioli, baked, pie, bread, muffins, (un)cheesecake, pumpkin-chocolate cake, roasted pumpkin seeds... more more more.
~weather and darkness~ days that are bright and blue and sunny and not hot. strong breezes. hot showers and long sleeves feel good. wearing a sweater and a scarf but no jacket. dark at 6 pm and at 6 am. lighting candles makes sense.
~nostalgia and melancholy~ all these things together - the darkness, coolness, good smells, good food, dying leaves... the feeling of ending. make me think about everything that's gone before. and everything that will die. but it an ultimately peaceful way. melancholy is not despair. sweet sadness.
~sirius and remus~ whoops, how did they get on here? well, today, i was driving, windows open, breeze blowing, sun high in the blue sky - sparkling off the charles river as i drove along it... so easy to miss someone on a day like today. so easy to tap into longing... so easy to forgive.
i've just made a zucchini risotto. very satisfying work. now i will make the tomato compote to go with it. rach has been at work for hours. :( what's with everyone working saturdays? so i'm cooking up a special dinner. the risotto with compote, mesclun salad, garlic bread and chardonnay. and listening to dar williams as i go...
and everyday will happen without you

Date: 2002-10-02 06:25 am (UTC)fall fall fall! yay. i get reeeeallly excited about this. and hey, some day we should all cook together or something. as a vegan, cooking around eating issues comes naturally to me - so we should be able to do something your tummy will agree to. *g*
