so, yesterday:
9 am warm ups were rather silly. especially the parts lead by omgflaminglygay!tenor who seems to be embarrassed by nothing. and he will now be called T. but they were good silly. good for loosening up and getting ready to sing. and some were led by G and those were good too.
and then they gathered us 'round to divide us into our groups. each of the six singers in the ensemble coaches a group. it was rather nerve wrecking, bc anney and i so wanted to be in the same group - the good group. and it continued to be nerve wrecking because we were in the last group called. but yay! we're together! and led by G, our favorite soprano. and M, the chick who auditioned at BU and P, the adorable gayboy who checked us in (and outed himself in 5 seconds flat). and 11 other people.
first thing, she handed out a Bach motet - komm jesu, komm. ::drools:: omg, so exciting. i've never sung one of his motets and i've always wanted to. and so she handed it out and then she sat down and went rifling through her papers and told us to get to it. P has perfect pitch (he's rather disgustingly talented really) and so he gave our G and we were off. it wasn't perfect, by any means, but it was exciting to be in group that could do it.
so, we have that piece, we have a mongolian piece about horses, which is strange but fun. and then we split into smaller groups and i was in a quintet singing jacob handl's trahe me post te. later we split again and i'm singing a lassus piece... passan..something... triomphe.
anney and i spent our lunch break in the grass by the waterfall, soaking up the sun on one of the most beautiful days ever. and then we met with Bob and worked a bit on a duet - medieval and yummy. and he suggested another one for us but we didn't have time to copy it before getting back to rehearsal.
after the afternoon rehearsal we had the renaissance dancing. it was fun. rather low key. it's like super easy, very calm contradancing. enjoyable if not physically taxing.
we actually got to go home for a bit. our sweeties came from picking up our farm share and we all had a quick dinner together and then anney and i went back for seminar, which is when all the groups sing bits for all the ensemble members and they all make suggestions and criticisms. this is when i found out for certain that our group is the best. far and away. but i didn't realize how much fun it would be to see the others. even when they were painfully bad, they were just amazing brave people. one guy stood up there and sang by himself, loudly and proudly and off key and i thought i might cry. it takes so much courage to sing in front of other people and these folks were giving it their best. and the ensemble was encouraging and helpful to them and it was great.
to our group(s), they were less with the soft and friendly and more with the criticism. probably figuring we can take it and our egos don't need so much stroking. which is probably true. mostly true. i discovered that singing bach at 9:30 pm is not my forte. but still, the whole thing was fun. but i was glad to come home and chill afterward. and i was frickin exhausted. and i still am.
i really just can't believe we're going to go do it all again. i hope we get more exciting music today. and i hope she makes a group subdivision that has anney and i both in it - that hasn't happened yet.
and, to prove i am still a fan: i like the book six title. i like how it sounds all fairy tale-ish and that it's a prince and not a princess. :) harry's new boyfriend, clearly.
