so we had the registering and singing for them part. and then we went back at 8 for a performance by the ensemble that runs the workshop. they are incredible. they sing a wide range of music, all a cappella. there are 6 of them - 4 men (one is a countertenor) and 2 women. both women have lovely voices but one is very sweet and light and great for early music and the other one is flat out stunning. she sounded gorgeous in all the various styles they sang. we will call her G and the other woman is K. i can't remember all the men's names. oh yes, E the baritone, B the countertenor, and bearded!tenor and omgflaminglygay!tenor.

during one of their sort of choreographed numbers, bearded!tenor accidentally hit G on the nose. she smiled and laughed and finished a great concert. and then went to the hospital. eek.

we all gathered 'round for intros and going over the schedule and such. anney and i are among about 6 people in our general age range. just about everyone else is 50 and up. not surprising. also, most people do this workshop every year. they seem to have a very summer-camp-y love for it. which is nice.

then we worked on the piece we'll be singing in the full group. it's a brazillian samba-ish thing. i think it'll probably be fun. but i wasn't impressed with omgflaminglygay!tenor's work teaching/leading the piece. he's a brilliant singer. but my guess is that he doesn't do a whole lot of conducting. he just talked for a good 15 minutes before we sang anything. that's a basic nono. and then we all made a great mash of the piece, making small improvements over time. at one point, i looked up from the music and he was dancing across the front of the room to the music. i think it was the cutest, funniest thing i have ever seen and i could barely keep myself from doubling over laughing.

then we went to the 'reception' to meet and mingle. except neither anney or i are inclined to do such things as 'mingle.' we walked around, ate potato chips and were about to leave when someone recognized me. when she told me how she knew me, i recognized her too. she auditioned for my program at BU while i was there. she mistakenly thought i was a voice major and was exceedingly complimentary of my voice - which she heard at rehearsals at BU at a time when i was sounding particularly good which is a long story - which, you know, didn't bother me. :) she was really nice. we'll call her M.

and then, since we had talked to someone, we figured we had earned our points and could leave. which we did.

so today we start their crazy schedule:
9:00 warm up and full group rehearsing
9:30 small group rehearsing
12:00 lunch
1:00 duo and trio coaching
1:30 small group rehearsing
4:15 renaissance dancing (hee! i'm dorkishly excited for this)
5:00 jazz or duo/trio coaching
5:30 dinner
7:00 seminar (when the small groups sing for everyone and the whole faculty critique constructively. eek.)
9:45 informal reading session

alright then. bring it on.

it is fun, very fun. singing is good.

and no, we haven't taken pics yet but we have to. man. i'm starting to think it's cute, actually. but i think we'll post a pic as soon as we have time.
