possibly excessive, but potential just right. depends on: size of shoes (strappy tiny number or combat boots?) and shoe-to-outfit ratio. some outfits and situations require completely different shoes than others. myself, i'm more a 4-pair kinda gal. 2 nice, 1 flip-floppy, 1 sneakery. add extra pair if i'm not exactly sure what kind of events i will be attending.

Not excessive, but I'm in with madmadharri - it depends on what kind of shoe. I'm a one-pair for a two-day trip kind of person, but for a whole week or more? You'll probably need comfy walking shoes, warm-weather sandals, dress shoes for the Big Nights, and All-Purpose pair, or also the In Case Those Other Ones Don't Look Quite Right pair, the In Case of Rain pair...
It depends on the type of shoe and what you like to do. If you like long hikes in the wilderness, you need a pair of boots for that, and most people need good walking shoes, dressy (or at least non-sneakery) shoes, and so on. Five pairs of high heels and nothing else is excessive, as is five pairs of nearly identical sneakers, but five pairs of different types of shoes for different purposes is probably about right.
