i'm freeeeeeeeee from the crazy!attorney's office! free! she was quite nice about everything. and i am on my merry way. alxamdulilaah.
and i have my tickets. for friday evening. and my friend allan is going to rehearse my choir next thursday. i just need to figure out what they'll be singing.
and then. the practicing. holy moly this thing is complicated. i want to kick britten in the shin once for every time he writes 'freely' in the score.
the hardest part, conductor-wise, so far is very near the beginning. the governess sings a solo about being nervous to start the job etc (quite reminiscent of the sound of music in content). it's recitative (freely, not bound to a tempo, for those who may not know) but under it is a timpani ostinato (repeated figure - but this one is irregular and not in counted measures). the timpani keeps a steady tempo while the soprano is in recitative and then between the soprano's phrases there are little interjections from the rest of the orchestra (in our case, the piano). the timpani has marked certain places where she can repeat one beat over and over until the soprano catches up. i, as conductor, would be the one expected to keep track of that. so... in my head, i have to keep track of where both the timpani and soprano are, being thus able to indicate to the timpanist whether she should hold in that place. and then when to move again, right before cueing the pianist. and it happens over and over again, but irregularly. it makes my head spin a bit. and practicing with the recording as i've been doing (usually considered a conducting nono but desperate times call for desperate measures) is useless, since i don't know how our soprano will do it.
oy.
i've had a couple panic attacks today. yeah. freaking out a bit. but. onward.
