Cover letters are... most HR people and headhunters only use a cover letter to see if you can spell and write a grammatical sentence, and if you know how to format a business letter.
Seriously. When I worked for a headhunting firm, that was the only importance they placed on them. So as long as it has no mistakes in it and is reasonably coherent, don't worry too much. The resume is more important.
oh i know, i know. and still i suffer. and this is... well, this is a job for a college teaching position. which makes me feel like there could be a bit more pressure. i don't know, maybe not. i feel pressure, whether or no it's there. bleh bleh bleh. it's like the grad shool personal statement. i have to say 'i fucking rule and i'm perfect for you' without sounding like i'm just promoting myself. right.
I like to spice mine up with a little something that makes them do a double take just so I'm sure they actually notice my resume. Perhaps: " Rescued 5 children and 11 cats from burning wearhouse while on crutches from football injury" or "Founded non-profit organization that saved the world"....u know, just a little something to grab their attention.
Even better! You could also include a little excerpt at the bottem, a quote if you will, right near your signature, I find a lot of folks are doing that these days....although it isn't slash related, but how cool would that be if it became the norm!
