hoo boy. i have a lot of lj and e-mail catching up to do. i haven't really been on since fridayish.
well, friday was the fantabulous concert. already covered that. saturday i did some of the things i wrote about doing - washed the floor, i went and bought rach some cough syrup, made lunch. and then rach and i went and bought yarn to do some very last minute knitting for her mother's birthday. she made a hat, i made a scarf. and then C and her boyfriend D showed up. it was great to see them. we went out for indian food and talked. mostly about labor - since they're both organizers and rach is studying labor. and i find it all interesting, thank goodness. we went to faces and played around with the furniture and stuff. then we came back here and watched a couple episodes of buffy - which D had never seen. he was pleasantly surprised.
sunday started calmly and eventually worked itself into a stressful fervor. we had breakfast with C and D, that was nice. and then our landlord came over to look at our leaky toilet. and determined that she would have to replace the tank and redo the floor. and then went away. C really wanted to cook some exciting cambodian food for lunch so we went out to fetch ingredients - via anney and jenny's house so she could meet them. just before we left, rach talked to her mom about what time we would be arriving at her place for the evening and she said, 'you're bringing the cake, right?' and so we bought carrot cake ingredients as well.
upon return, we launched the kitchen into a certain degree of chaos. we were making cambodian style spring rolls and tofu citronelle. and carrot cake. when we were younger, C and i were notorious for being ridiculously messy cooks. i've pretty much grown out of that. ... yeah. so, i was stressed while we cooked- about the mess and the time it would take to clean it up - since we would have to be leaving for rach's mom's house. i tried to keep things under control, but i was fighting a losing battle. alas. but the food was fantastic. sooooo delicious. and not terribly difficult to make. so then the landlord came back and told us we had to get all our bathroom furniture out (including the stuff attached to the wall) and empty the water out of the toilet. and the kitchen was still a mess. and we hadn't finished the hat and scarf or frosted the cake. and it was already past the time we should have left for her mother's.
in about half an hour, we got the stuff out of the bathroom, packed for the night, finished the hat (which, sadly, turned out to be too small), frosted and packed the cake, mostly cleaned the kitchen (C and D helped but i'm too anal to leave that job up to other people) and were out the door. i finished the scarf in the car (we did have to pull over to tie in the ends).
when we got there, rach's mother had almost finished cooking the somewhat unfortunate tofu dish she was really excited to make for us. her boyfriend was there - attired in suit and tie because it's just the kind of guy he is, i guess. dinner and cake were quite pleasant. J, the bf, rather calms and balances rach's mom - who can be a little overwhelming. so it was good. we looked at some slides from when rach was wee. very cute.
and today, we breakfasted with them and then went to a discount fabric store in a nearby town and got some very good deals. and made the absolutely gorgeous drive back here. it was so so beautiful. the foliage must be just about at peak there. and this is a most perfect day. ahhhh, new england autumn, how i love thee.
::deletes cranky section:: i was writing about some of my cranky feelings this weekend - about people not really being interested with what's going on with me. but i think mostly that was crankiness. i should write instead about how, after breakfast this morning, i walked out into the fields around rach's mom's house and for a while it felt like being in some of those rivendell scenes when the leaves are constantly falling through the air. because they were, and it was so beautiful. the wind in the trees sounded like running water. it was lovely and not at all cranky.
and now, journal catch-up!

How lovely! We walked for a bit in the woods yesterday, and went through an area where almost all of trees has yellow leaves, and sunlight poured through the trees to all the yellow leaves on the ground, and it made me think of Lothlorien.

Date: 2003-10-15 09:10 am (UTC)lessee, what did i say?
the key to the last minute knitting was big needles and fuzzy yarn. and a crazed sense of determination.
and yes, the woods, the fall the elves... i love this time of year and it seems likely that i will evermore associate it just a little bit with tolkien. as i already do with sirius/remus. not a bad thing.
