oy. i didn't know what i was getting myself into. you people are cruel. well, not all of you. cookies i can handle. but symplegades? anyway, there will be some firsts for me in these...

my first ever het. it's not really all that het. oops.
the words were altitude, quiescent and farmer

hp for [livejournal.com profile] bonibaru

if the you were in a burning building and you could only save a priceless artwork or your cat, a farmer or a cow, your mother or your father, a baby or a house elf, your best friend or your boyfriend, which would you choose?

hermione always refuses to answer these hypothetical questions. what are the chances of such a situation ever presenting itself? she has no time to waste on these unsolvable ethical conundrums. she always makes the most logical decision in any situation, she's not worried.

~

she heaves malfoy's inert body onto the window sill and crawls up after him. she pauses once there, as the view of the grounds from this altitude pulls at her quiescent acrophobia and makes her stomach churn. but the heat at her back grows ever more intense. she swallows, steps over the broomstick, pulls malfoy on with her and pushes off into the expansive night sky.

no one ever asks your friend or your enemy?. the answer seems too obvious. but hermione applies logic as always: harry potter is the boy who lives. he can save himself.

[edit] where are my manners? thanks to [livejournal.com profile] hominidj, [livejournal.com profile] wax_jism and [livejournal.com profile] cupiscent for help with the use of the word quiescent.

Hey, I like this a lot. The end is hard-hitting. Have you read the poem "Ethics" by Linda Pastan? That was the first thing I thought of when I read your drabble.

ooh. that's a great poem. i'd never read it before but yes, i can see why you thought of it. *g* this was a total hermione sue in that i'm the one who really can't stand those questions. which makes me love the poem. thanks.

Oh. Well done. *g*

I like the way the focus swings from the general to the specific. (Plus, I love the idea of Hermione/Draco, but we won't go into that. *g*)

the art of the drabble at its poignant best -- it moves smoothly to its inevitable yet surprising conclusion. dare i say it? ok, i dare: it's perfect.

Wow! That was really, really, really, really good! I can't believe you worked in farmer, LOL. I was sure that was the killer. You're my hero!

lol. yeah, i thought farmer would be the killer too. until i realized that, though i know what the word quiescent means, i don't think i'd ever used it in a sentence before. thus, i had to call in the troops for support on that one. but it worked out and by the end i could just toss that harmless little farmer right in there. :)

thank you.

applause!

Oh, wow. This is fantastic! I'm very impressed. I usually don't even like drabbles very much (no short-story fan, me--I'm all about the epics), but this is just... yeah, what [livejournal.com profile] starbuckle said. Perfect.
