has anyone out there seen lan yu? looks like it could be good or could be cheezy... but i'm quite curious. and pondering gay movies, thanks to iscaris

this morning i was going to work work work and instead, i read wax_jism's overture. dangit. i could say i regret it but i would be lying. because, hot damn, was that good. and yep, that's all the helpful commentary my brain has on the subject currently. good. like, wicked good. like, go read it, man. doesn't matter whether x-slash is your thing.

I read quite a few reviews of Lan Yu -- apparently it ends pretty tragically. I haven't been entirely enthralled with the Asian films dealing with homosexuality -- there is this very terminally depressing turn these stories always take and never do peak.

Sometimes I wonder if, while claiming to promote a more open mentality towards alternative lifestyles, these movies are actually sending messages like, "See? When you get into a gay relationship, all you get are heartaches/beatings/persecutions by family members/eventual suicide."

eek. well, yeah... but there's that whole reality issue. still, i'm always a fan of the happy(er) ending myself. and i think we get a goodly lot of them in gay movies, all things considered.

lan yu has the added intrigue for me of being adapted from an 'internet novel.' i feel like i should inherently support this sort of effort. but maybe sometime when i am more prepared and able to handle tragic manlove. at this point, i still can't get over sirius/remus. not that i actually want to get over it.
