tales of the city

there's this guy i see every day when i go to work downtown. he's always standing in the same place, whatever the time of day i happen to be going to or coming from work. he stands on a grate outside the park street T stop, facing the street - always on that same grate. and regardless of the weather, he's wearing the same thing every time i see him: a big down coat, boots, a backpack, heavy gloves, a scarf pulled up over his nose and a hood. he wears headphones and he's always looking back and forth at the street in front of him - which requires moving his whole body because his hood cuts off his peripheral vision. i often wonder about him - doesn't he get tired, standing up all day? isn't that outfit stifling in 80 degree weather like we had a few weeks ago?
today, as i came up to tremont from downtown crossing, he was crossing the street toward me. i almost did something ridiculous like shout and point. but i managed to refrain and instead watched him when i got to my side of the street. he walked down tremont and then turned toward st. paul's. i couldn't see whether he went in. it was really hard not to follow him.
he was back on his grate when i was on my way home.
in the subway, lately there's been this ferrety looking white guy with too-long hair playing guitar and singing. he's pretty good but i find myself a little put off by his appearance and so usually don't stand too close to listen or anything. he was there when i was going home today and i went by as usual and then sat and read over sea, under stone. and then suddenly the music caught my attention. i looked over and there was another guy singing with ferret-man's guitar playing - a black man with a really nice voice. from the conversation they had after the song, i learned that they had just randomly met. they were exchanging numbers so they could meet up and perform together some more... and damn, that's a good thing. they did another song together and everyone in the station had turned to watch them. something about the two of them was captivating. no one had been giving ferret-man money before but now tons of people were coming over. i don't know... they were just great together and it made me really happy.
and now, i have a few minutes to throw some shit together and get out to noho. i'm trying not to be discouraged by our lack of apartment possibilities. if nothing else, we should have a lovely time seeing
