ugh. writing an e-mail that goes something like this: hello, you don't know me and i don't know you, but you know choirs in the area, will you help me find a job?
Well damn, look what happens when Camilla's bored at work... this is really rough and fairly crappy (and you've probably already got these basics - if you're not already done...), but if it's useful at all... *g*
Dear [cool choir person]: I got your name from [some random place or a friend or whatever], with whom I studied in the Choral Music Masters program at Boston University [well, if that's true]. I received my Masters in the spring of this year. I am currently the choir director for the UU Church in [town] and I teach at [school]. I will be moving to Northampton in September, and I am exploring my employment options western Massachusetts. [My friend or whoever] suggested that your knowledge of [the area choral music scene] could be a valuable resource, and recommended I get in touch with you. Is there a convenient time for you that we might have a brief informational telephone [interview/session]? Thank you so much for your time. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, phineas
some good stuff in there, but indeed it came too late. this is what i said:
Dear Dr. ____,
My name is Phineas Jones. I'm a Mount Holyoke graduate and recently received my masters in choral conducting from Boston University. I will be moving from Boston to the Amherst area this summer. Old Choir Director recommended that I contact you as I begin my search for work in western Mass. I realize you must be very busy and I don't mean to impose, but if you have any suggestions for me about where or how to search for jobs in choral music in your area, I would be most grateful. I have attached my resume to this e-mail, in case it is helpful.
Thank you very much, Phineas Jones
short. if it doesn't work, i'll harass him more later. :)
Oh lord. ::rolls eyes and laughs:: I'm torn between feeling, "aw, shucks, thanks. I'm glad I can be inspirational in some way..." and "good god, you're modelling anything on me?! look at my last bunch of months and then run, run away!" The latter is mostly winning out. Mostly bc I've only been recently toeing at getting back on that track again myself.
Note to self: Other people admire your tenacity and drive, so those qualities are in there someplace. Must find and display them so as not to disappoint fans. Also, said finding and displaying would doubtless be helpful to you too.
Myself, I'm much envious of your knowledge of what you want to do in your life in a longer term (like, more than the next year or so that I seem to work with) way.
