that's right, Slashers Against the War

a lovely little chat with [livejournal.com profile] antheia resulted in that ever-important question: why the hell not?

the big protest is going down in nyc saturday the 15th. round trip buses from boston are a mere $30 (there are western mass buses too ($20)! i have info if anyone wants). we all like to rant and mope in our journals. why not get out there and shout? let our snarky voices be heard! so, who's with us??? leave a comment for [livejournal.com profile] antheia or me and we'll figure it out. and witty slashy anti-war slogans and posters are, of course, welcome.

I. GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE DEMONSTRATION, SPONSORING ORGANIZATIONS AND THE LOGISTICS OF DEPARTURES FROM THE BOSTON AREA

On February 15, millions the world over will gather to say No to War! From Bangkok to San Juan, from Johannesburg to Rome, the people of the world will speak out in what the London Daily Mirror says may be „the largest ever mobilization against war.‰ Fresh on the heels of the largest demonstration since the Vietnam era in Washington, D.C. this past January 18, the growing movement for peace and justice here in the United States will converge on the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City for a mass demonstration called by the national anti-war coalition, United for Peace and Justice (UPJ, www.unitedforpeace.org <http://www.unitedforpeace.org/> ) to oppose the Bush administration‚s incessant effort to drive our country, the UN, and the world into war against Iraq.

Here in the Boston area, the regional United for Justice with Peace Coalition (UJP, www.justicewithpeace.org <http://www.justicewithpeace.org/> ) is currently mobilizing to bring thousands from around the Boston area to New York City. Buses will be leaving from the following four locations: Alewife station (Red line on the T), JFK/UMass (Red line on the T), Boston Common (Red/Green line on the T), and Roxbury Community College (Orange line on the T). Buses will depart from each of these locations at 6 a.m., so in order to guarantee that we reach New York on time we will hope to leave as close to this time as possible. Therefore, please make every effort to arrive by 6 a.m. Buses will be leaving New York City at 7 p.m. that same evening and are scheduled to arrive back in Boston before midnight (of Sunday February 16, 2003). Each bus will hopefully have a „bus captain‰ who will serve as a point person for any problems you may have, help coordinate programmatic activities for the time in transit, and try to ensure that everything remains orderly and not too stressful.

II. PURCHASING TICKETS, FINANCING BUSES, AND HOW YOU CAN HELP BUILD THE BOSTON AREA MOBILIZATION ON NEW YORK

A. Purchasing Tickets

Because the number of buses that can be provisioned by regional organizers is limited only by available money to fund their purchase, UJP is writing to urge that you please buy your ticket for a seat on one of the anti-war buses to New York City as soon as possible. Presently we have at least 15 buses and are hoping to send as many as 50. In order to make this hope a reality, however, we will need to coordinate the demand for tickets (and the income this will bring in upon purchase) with the supply of buses (which becomes less certain as time goes by, since more and more buses are absorbed everyday for all sorts of other chartered trips). Therefore, in order to avoid the problem of shortfall of available seats through a late explosion of demand for bus tickets from Boston to the anti-war mobilization and a depletion of the additional supply of buses that various companies still can make available to us, please buy your ticket in one of the following three ways, as soon as possible. Note that the three options ranked in terms of most preferable to least, from the perspective of the bus organizing effort.

1. You can purchase tickets directly on the internet through <http://207.68.164.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=en&lah=cb093c1857c3e42b058bf288399374a8&lat=1044348648&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2ersvpeace%2eorg> >www.rsvpeace.org <http://www.rsvpeace.org/>

2. You can purchase tickets by calling (617) 661-6130 x-450, and then sending a check (payable to the United for Justice with Peace Coalition) to the following address: Attn: Karen, UJP Buses; 2161 Massachusetts Avenue; Cambridge, MA 02140.

3. You may be able to catch members of the UJP Bus team tabling at certain peace and justice-related events in the course of the next two weeks, selling tickets directly. So keep your eyes peeled in case, for whatever reason, you are absolutely not able to purchase your ticket(s) through option #1 or #2 above.

B. For Individuals with Disabilities...

To our friends with disabilities, we ask that you contact KMOrian@afsc.org /(617)-661-6130 x450 in order to express any special accommodations you may need. We will make every effort to seek to procure enough buses that are properly equipped to make the trip both possible and comfortable for individuals with disabilities. However, in order to do this we will be greatly assisted by having information in advance about these issues because given the supply and demand of buses we are procuring whatever vehicles that are made available to us at this stage, and not all of these buses are/will be properly equipped for individuals with disabilities who may need particular accommodations.

C. Ticket Prices and the Scholarship Fund for our Low Income/Unemployed Friends

Round-trip tickets are being sold for $30 per head and must, for reasons relating to financing issues outlined above, be considered „non-refundable.‰ For our low-income and unemployed friends who are not otherwise able to afford to go to New York, UJP is also making available a certain number of „scholarships‰ through which we can subsidize a limited number of tickets up to 100% of the round trip price, depending on what level of contribution the given individual can make. We also encourage anyone who is willing and able to afford doing so, to consider becoming a sponsor for others who cannot afford to purchase tickets, by donating to the scholarship fund either by purchasing extra tickets directly, specifically earmarking those you will not be using, towards the purpose of subsidizing others to GET ON THE BUS! Even if you are not going to New York yourself, you can still support the mobilization by donating in this manner to the scholarship fund.

D. Sponsor a Bus through an Up-Front Loan to the Bus Organizing Effort

Given the above-described problem of coordinating the demand for tickets, supply of buses, time remaining before February 15th and the limits on the present funds we have available to procure buses, besides through purchasing your own ticket/scholarship tickets you can also help finance the mobilization through providing a loan to UJP that will be used for the purpose of acquiring additional buses, as this becomes necessary. For any organization/individual who is interested in possibly making such a loan, we would appreciate having the opportunity to speak further with you so we can discuss the details, logistics, and any potential risks involved. (In order to see how to contact UJP, see Section IV below.)

III. VOLUNTEERING TO HELP ORGANIZE THE MOBILIZATION: SOME SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN DO

Whether you can or cannot go to New York on the day of the mobilization, there are no shortage of things you can do to help in the organizational effort before then. Consider any of the following as a wonderful contribution you can make to the effort of building a better, more secure, less violent, and more just world, capable of being truly shared by all of its inhabitants, both present and future:

1. Volunteer to be a bus captain! As described above, we are hoping to have at least one bus captain per bus. Captains will play the crucial role of point person for all their fellow passengers on a given bus and will be needed on the morning of February 15th to help in the effort of channeling ticket holders to the appropriate bus to board at the given locations of departure. For more information on becoming a bus captain, email <http://sea2fd.sea2.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/compose?mailto=1&msg=msg1044348527.17&start=2025832&len=17938&src=&type=x&to=duncan%2emcfarland%40na%2esappi%2ecom&cc=&bcc=&subject=&body=&curmbox=f000000001&a=864a6ee50615b6a9b3e846ced4bdf381> >Duncan.McFarland@NA.SAPPI.COM

2. Spread the word in your community. Tell your friends about February 15. Encourage them to buy their tickets. And please forward this announcement far and wide, print it out and hang it up in your office, place of worship, school, or wherever else, or give it to a friend or family member directly. You can also start postering flyers publicly in your community. Flyers and handbills, complete with ticket purchasing information for the Boston area, are available in PDF format, in English and Spanish, through the following web links.

3. Join your local UJP community group and plug into the Boston area anti-war movement. Remember, February 15th is only yet another beginning. There is much work we must do in the next few weeks and also far beyond. So please contact your local/closest UJP community groups, which are located throughout the Boston area, from Somerville to Dorchester to Needham and beyond. For a full list and for UJP Community Group contacts see www.justicewithpeace.org <http://www.justicewithpeace.org/> You can also sign up for our email announcement list through the website as well. Beyond this, others of you may want to get plugged into UJP through the weekly Tuesday evening vigil in Copley Square, that has involved Boston area residents bearing witness to our core value of peace with justice since September 2001.

I will absolutely be there.

It's a thirty minute bus ride into NYC for me and even less with no traffic--
So... give me the details, when/where are we meeting, etc.

"Bush is Sauron, Save the Shire"
"War is Worse that Hetsmut"
"WWDD? - What Would Dumbledore Do?"

I'm waiting to see if I've got a space on a bus, but I plan to be in NYC. Will be with my brother, so probably won't seek you guys out unless I go into uber-confessional mode with him... :D. But it'll be good to know we were all there.

seriously though, we're gathering at NW corner of 38th and first at 11. if you happened to wander by, you could wink at us and we'd give the secret slasher smile.
also, there's now a website (http://gelfling.org/saw) and you can sign up and be a member!

*g* hope you guys had as much fun as I did. I don't think I'd have been able to get to your corner if my life had depended on it, given the crowd and the police barricades. But, dude, did you see all the signs with the Daily Mirror pic of Bush and Blair in sweet wuvv? :D It made my, and [livejournal.com profile] mark356's, day. Well, the whole damn demo made my day, actually. :D
