ooh, untitled06 is a smart cookie. so, having listed books by first line, if you were going to read one of them and had to choose based on the first line, which would it be?
it's totally different from what i usually read. i picked it up one summer and thought why not? only later did i find out it was, like, the national best seller at the time.
it's about a man, inman, who deserts the army during the civil war and walks home and a city woman, ada, whose father has died and left her living alone in the country. she gets help from another woman, ruby, who knows how to keep herself alive with no help - live off the land, if you will. inman and ada had a bit of a thing going before he went to war, so he's coming home to her. that does nothing to explain the complete amazingness of the book. it's so full of detail and beautifully written. oh, and soon it will be a movie starring jude law. lol. that should be interesting. it might be a good movie, but it's one of those cases where you just know it won't capture all the beautiful detail of the book.
that first line is when inman wakes up in a make-shift military hospital, the day he decided to desert - walks out through the window and doesn't go back. god, i love this book.
