Rampant heterophobia? If it exists, it's news to me. I don't doubt that there are some relatively small subcultures, such as the on-line slash communities where it may exist to a degree, although even there I've found considerable tolerance for a wide variety of lifestyles.
My RL is rather firmly entrenched in young, urban, professional (did I just say yuppie? *gg*) middle america and while I would venture to say there is considerably less homophobia in this group (or at least my circle of friends) than there used to be say,in my parent's generation, thank god, the concept of "heterophobia" existing on a widespread basis is inconceivable to me.
I've even lived in some very gay-friendly communities, and there, just as anywhere else, anyone who practices an alternative lifestyle of any sort is in for some constant challenges. You put it well, Phineas!
