i didn't actually take any of yesterday's pictures myself. i passed the camera off to rach and she did the work. this here is toward the beginning of the section i conducted. looks like 45a, the long recitative section. which is why most of the instrumentalists are just sitting around, waiting for something to do. and why i'm so still.

there are a bunch more pictures under the cut. and some music too. it's a multimedia post! woo.

ok, so this is before we left. i was amused by myself in concert makeup and my dorky fannish t-shirt. (which i love, don't get me wrong. i embrace the dorkness.) so, yeah, i made rach take some pics of me posing - also like a dork.

and the point of being dressed like that was that i didn't feel inclined to move the dusty risers and podiums and all that while wearing my black suit. it was a good choice.

rach took this pic early on, when the instruments were meandering onto stage and warming up.

friend rachel conducted in the first half. she did a beautiful job. when she conducted the chorale in her section, i thought i was going to lose it, myrtle style, for a minute. it was beautiful and emotional. and so i give you a clip of john eliot gardner's version of said chorale. i'd have to say i prefer's rachel's version. this one is a little austere for my tastes:

ich will hier bei dir stehen

matt's section was right before mine. he had a big job - first conducting his section, then i took the podium and he went back into the choir and sang the evangelist's part for the rest of the piece. damn. here, he's conducting megan's aria, erbarme dich. which is... one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever in the world. so gorgeous. so i share. this is gardner again.

erbarme dich

i think this is the chorale i conducted. that the only reason i can think of that the gamba would be playing. i like this picture bc the motion of my arm could used for a textbook illustration of a downbeat.

this is kelly's aria, aus liebe, and the most frustrating experience i've possibly ever had as a conductor. i had been struggling with the tempo in rehearsals because i wanted it to be languorously slow and the oboes and flute expected that. but kelly's lungs couldn't hack it and we had to take it faster. and finally, yesterday, i had a revelation about tempo relationships and yada yada and i was excited and ready to tackle it. and then... the oboes did not look at me. not even for the goddamned downbeat. i was staring at the first oboe, waiting for him to make eye contact and he just didn't. i could have leaped over the organ and throttled him. it went fine, i guess. but it could have been amazing if that guy weren't such a jackass. riikka knows him and she told me that he told her he 'doesn't like to watch conductors.' FUCK YOU, ASSHOLE. ahem. anyway. the point of this should be that it's an incredibly gorgeous aria. and kelly did a great job. and fuckface didn't manage to completely sabotage it. and here's gardner's version, as slow as i wish ours could have been.

aus liebe

and this is wendy's aria. i still had some tempo issues, but not nearly as bad. just some weird stuff with the low strings lagging, which they did in a bunch of movements, not just mine. wendy did a great job.

and it's back to the recitative. you can see matt singing his heart out, just over the music stand to my right. if the arias felt like some kind of trial, a battle of the wills, maybe, the recits and the choir parts were my reward. they went fluidly, easily. i was pleased.

the bows. i had secretly collected money from the choir and bought myrtle flowers. here, i'm giving them to her and we're hugging.

this is a horribly unflattering picture of me. i mean, can you even count the chins? but it's still the happy, tired, post-concert look that it's nice to have on un-film. me, little scott and the passion score.

in conclusion... YAY BACH!
