Have you read Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy (beginning with The Golden Compass)? When the third one (The Amber Spyglass--forgive me, as a fellow geek you probably know these books too!) came out, I read all three of them together, and the ending of the last book just broke me. I remember driving around for several days afterwards just thinking about the characters (don't want to give too much away) and really getting weepy. Like, so weepy that when I finally reached the post office (or wherever I was going), I'd have to wipe my eyes and get a hold of myself before going in. So... I know whereof you speak!
