this made me laugh. a lot. and all this passion of christ yammer going on feels weird to me as i am in the middle of reading lamb; the gospel according to biff, christ's childhood pal on the recommendation of many, particularly
starbuckle. yeah, so, i'm in a "jesus? yeah, i know him" sort of place. and i have decided that the movie is evol. i was all reserving judgement until the pr machine spammed my lj. back off, fuckers! i find this whole thing annoying. i am a jesus movie buff, if there are such people. and i'm bothered by this thing where everyone's like 'ooooh, controversial movie about jesus' which actually doesn't sound especially controversial. it sounds kind of lame.
i think everyone should go rent jesus of montreal. that's a jesus movie. and lothaire bluteau is so pretty.
so, the temp job:
it's at a small woodworking company that's recently changed hands or moved or something... it's not entirely clear to me what the deal is, except that they're reorganizing and trying to figure a lot of shit out. the big boss man there is D. he seems very nice but also very sleazy. in a nice way. he reminded me a little of bill clinton. there's also G and J. they seem to be in charge of some things too. all guys.
there's one big room in the middle of the office. it's big and ugly and was last decorated sometime in the early 70s by my guess. my desk is in one corner of the big room, G's in the opposite corner. there are offices and meeting rooms off the big room. so, i am completely exposed and there's no hope of surreptitious phone use or any such thing. there's a computer at my desk but i can't log on to it (yes, i tried. repeatedly.) i may ask about that if there is as a little (read: nothing) for me to do today as yesterday.
so, mostly i was just bored yesterday. but there were also a bunch of things i found really frustrating/annoying. things that can go in that book on temping and office work that
camillafarfalla and
mmm_cake will write one day. mostly it was just annoying how very little they told me. even though it was a small office of friendly people, i don't know what kind of woodworking the company does. they showed me how to do the most basic things on the phone and then gave me a list with their three extensions. ok. so then i get a call asking for wolfsong. wilson? i ask. wolfsong. ok. so i put the person on hold and ask J who was nearby if there is a wolfsong here (which seems odd to me, since i have only seen three people. this is when i learn that around the corner and down the hall from the big room is a huge wood shop. which makes sense. but nobody mentioned it. so, i can page through to the shop when people call for them. great. but i don't have a list of names or anything, no way to know who's in there and who's not. i had to ask to be shown where the bathroom is.
wolfsong, it turns out, is the only other woman in the place. she came out and said hi after i paged her. she is what they call a Big Lesbian. rainbow triangle on her hat and all. so that's nice.
for the final hour of my time there yesterday, they were having an all staff meeting. all the woodworkers appeared and gathered into one room with D, G and J. they left the door open. so now i know that the business is in the crapper and that's why D just started there on friday. he's going to save them! he has plans! they need more productivity! better time use! more realistic pricing estimates! it's no one's fault, this isn't about blame. no, we're all in it together and we have to make it work together. also, you people are slobs and you need to clean up after yourselves.
after listening to that meeting, i vowed to myself to purge the words productive and productivity from my vocabulary. elch. they make me feel dirty.
right, so today D said he might have some tedious tasks for me. w00t. tedium can sometimes make time move faster than boredom does. fortunately, lamb is quite the fun book, so even boredom will be ok.
