what's all this about pancakes? hm.
i was just thinking... the person who invented cooking was wicked smart.
so, now that rach has mentioned it in her journal, i can squee proudly here that northeastern has offered her an assistantship - tuition covered plus a $12,000 stipend. dude. wheee!!! that's some good news. i hope umass comes up with something similarly appealing for her.
i was just contemplating old jobs because i told
annelarissa that the one where i was happiest was the northampton clothing store. and that remains true, 5 years after working there. it was all about the people. olie was the best boss in the world - as long as we did what was necessary, she didn't care what else we did. i could sit and read at the counter if no one needed me. i could run whatever errands i needed to up and down main street. her kids, tulani and maceo, would come in and hang out. they were adorable. kim, angel and jamie worked there too. kim was my age and had a son, andre. angel was a dancer. her huge and sweet boyfriend, ian, became a fixture in the store. jamie has since married her boy, jim, and had a baby. actually, the other way around. working with any combination of them was great. angel and i liked to put on the clothes and stand in the window as live mannequins. or sometimes just sit up there in the window and watch people walk by and muse about them. on slow days, we would do that for hours. we all talked about everything. i bitched to them daily about my gf, erica, and they let me. don't know why.
my favorite memory - the one the makes me tear up - is from christmastime that year. maceo was nine and that meant he could learn an instrument at school. he wanted to learn saxophone but olie and bobby were trying to convince him to pick flute bc they had a flute and they couldn't afford to rent a sax. it didn't take me long to decide to offer up my old sax - i hadn't played it since junior high and it was just gathering mold in my room at my parents' house. maceo was ectatic. so anyway, christmas. we had one of our in-store parties. all the significant others (well, not erica) were there and we set up a big table for food we all brought in and gave each other cards and presents - occasionally pausing to ring up a sale. i think customers liked this atmosphere, really, it was fun. and then tulani and maceo came from school and maceo had his sax and wanted to play us christmas songs. so we all stood around him - some customers too - as he played, pretty well for a beginner and so earnestly. there was a whole lot of sniffling when he finished. it was a moment cut out of some cheezy movie - and looked that way especially because we were such a diverse group - black, filipino, brazilian-american, and whiteys like me. but it happened and it was great. and there's some kind of lesson there about work that you love. some kind.
oh, phone call... i have an appointment with a therapist two weeks from tomorrow. go me.
