tolkien always does that to me, too. awed melancholy is a good term for it, i think. part of the unfulfilledness, for me, always seems to come from the pervasive sense of that-which-has-passed-away. i always leave a reading or a viewing just longing to be in that world. even the battles have the ineffable sweetness of legend... i don't know. maybe [livejournal.com profile] camillafarfalla's latest icon quote says it best.

my favorite lit prof always said that the myth of the golden age is both the oldest and the most melancholy trope. i agree.

but yeah. i hear you on the inexplicable sadness. hang in there! :::hugs:::
